Leading GYN Laparoscopic Surgeon Is First In Georgia

Dr. Michael Randell, a gynecologist on the Medical Staff at Northside Hospital - Atlanta, performed the Hospital's and Georgia's first daVinci robotic myomectomy using the new Morcellex Sigma Tissue Morcellator by Ethicon, part of the Johnson & Johnson family of companies.

The Morcellex Sigma Tissue Morcellator is designed for challenging cases with safety and control in mind.  The new device features a new gearing system designed to help surgeons through long and challenging cases, a new trigger mechanism designed to improve ergonomics, and other improvements.  Visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfE0VzOLxRI to watch a video of Dr. Randell using the Morcellex.

"Offering my patients the safest and least invasive surgery has always been my goal," said Dr. Randell.  "Today, with the use of the daVinci robot and devices like the Morcellex Sigma Tissue Morcellator, women can have their fibroids removed safely, through a few small incisions.  This allows for a woman to keep her uterus and return to normal activity soon after the surgery while experiencing quick healing and less pain.

Dr. Randell, who performed his 800th robotic procedure on Friday, August 9th, and has performed more than 2,000 laparoscopic surgeries, is on the cutting edge of minimally invasive surgery.  In 2010, Dr. Randell performed the first single incision hysterectomy at Northside Hospital using only one small incision.  In 2011, Dr. Randell performed the Hospital's first tubal ligation reversal surgery using the daVinci robot resulting in a successful pregnancy and the delivery of a heathy baby.  Last year he performed the Hospital's first fibroid removal using the new MyoSure XL device from Hologic.

"I am always looking for innovative devices that allow me to do more for my patients through minimally invasive surgery," said Dr. Randell.

Fibroids are very common.  They occur in 2 or 3 out of every 10 women over the age of 35.  They occur most often in women between the ages of 30 and 50, although some women in their 20s sometimes have them.  Fibroids can cause pain, abnormal bleeding, infertility, and other symptoms.

Dr. Randell, who is a leading expert in fibroid surgery, is on the cutting edge of minimally invasive surgery. His website www.fibroidsatlanta.com provides detailed information about the services he provides to women with fibroids.

"Unfortunately, many women are unaware of the newest surgical techniques available to them to remove fibroids " said Dr. Randell.  "Minimally invasive surgery is better for patients.  This can be done as an outpatient and patients can return to their normal routine much quicker."

In addition to taking care of patients, Dr. Randell is an instructor to other surgeons locally and across the country on robotic surgery.  Last year he was invited to speak at the International Congress of Minimally Invasive Gynecology/Urology Symposium. The event featured experts from around the world. Dr. Randell lectured on robotic myomectomy techniques that he has perfected.  He also teaches at advanced robotic surgery courses.

Dr. Randell recommends that women needing gynecologic surgery should seek out a well trained and experienced laparoscopic or robotic surgeon.  Dr. Randell suggests using internet search engines, hospital referral services, and asking other doctors for recommendations.
